Bio-Bot Webquest
a Commercial “Collage” of the Human Body |
|
The Task
Objective:
Your group is to make a “BioBot” that "best" resembles the structures and functions of the organs and structures found in a human body and use the model to create a short commercial (infomercial) video presentation.
The Process
Preparing:
· Brainstorm the "best" analogies for the organs and/or structures found in a human body (see preceding list below)
· Structure over function; however, try to accommodate both
· Non-perishable items only (no food of any kind)
· Focus on non-costly, junk, and useless items found around the home
· Decide who will bring materials that you'll need among the people in your group and write it down so everyone knows who will bring what
· Don’t forget items and tools to build the “BioBot”
· Have a back-up plan (i.e. phone tree/duplicate assignment responsibilities)
· Keep your area clean and organized
· Be imaginative yet anatomically correct
· Work is to be done outside of class (note: pending time and availability some time may be given in class)
· May wish to use a box, bag, or container to place parts, tools, items, etc….
· The model must have an outline or definitive shape of the human body
· The model is to be between ~1 and ~2 meters in length (no exceptions)
· Special effects are optional; however, “may” help your grade
· The model may be laying down or standing up
· No items are to be used that clearly represent a structure or organ (i.e. No Mr. Potato Head parts)
· Any form of poor taste during the construction or with the project will result in disciplinary action
· Be prepared to discuss your reasoning’s behind your project, structures, organs, and/or terms before or after the video commercial
· Remember, the assignment is to build a model that can be used or sold in a commercial setting
· Learn and review from the project
· Have fun with the project

Presenting:
· After your Bio-Bot has been built; your group is to create a video to sell your Bio-Bot in a short commercial (infomercial)
· Do your best to make a well managed and rehearsed, creative, and professional video
· Involve definitions and functions of the organs and structures on the Bio-Bot
· Include all required “organs and/or structures” and “item and/or analogy”
· A total time limit length of 5-10+/- minutes for the quality video is required
· Be highly aware especially to sound and lighting. If either one of these key areas are lacking, a dramatic decrease in your grade may occur
· Include as many manipulatives needed to go along with the video
· You may use "stand-in`s" (other people) with your video
· Feel free to place the Bio-Bot in a different environment, room, setting, etc…
· Stay focused on the requirements of the assignment
· Do not damage your Bio-Bot in any way
· Each member of the team needs to have about equal time on the video
· If someone is camera shy, then their voice needs to be heard
· Having a separate person (not on the team) to run and/or direct the video is high suggested
· Have credits before or after the video
· Get permission if you have to remove the Bio-Bot from the room/school for any length of time (hours / days)
· A pass can be given to help work on the video outside of class
· Let it be known that you are in need of a video camera if you do not have or cannot get a camera
· Video may be burnt on DVD, Blue-ray, or CDROM / flash drive, or preferably in Google Drive in a folder (format best to be .mp4) and shared

The Conclusion
During this scientific exploration and experience share what you will learn with each other; it is an essential part of scientific inquiry. It will be fine to have some disagreements and debates, just remember to be flexible and willing to do your part. Try to put as much effort into the project as you can, be imaginative, ask questions, and participate to the fullest of your ability. In the science of biology, these issues face scientist and people every day!
